Top 5 Romance Anime Male Main Characters Who Aren’t Completely Useless
Okay, so let’s be honest. A lot of male leads in romance anime are just there. Like, they exist, they blush, they trip and fall into the female lead's bosoms or get dragged around by a much better female character and somehow that’s romance? I’m tired. So here’s a list of five romance anime guys who are actually worth watching. Not perfect, but they either have a personality or grow one. Or at least aren’t just standing there looking confused all season.
1. Kyo Sohma (Fruits Basket)
This man is just full of feelings and rage and guilt and trauma. When Fruits Basket started, I genuinely thought he was gonna be another loud tsundere guy with nothing behind it. But no. Kyo is going through it and you see every step of it on his face.
He’s angry, yes. But he’s not stupid. And when he loves someone, he loves them hard. Like, this boy’s idea of love is protecting them even if it means they hate him. Toxic? A little. Real? Absolutely.
What makes him stand out is how much he grows. You watch him confront his past, open up, apologise, learn how to stay instead of run. Also the scene where he hugs Tohru in the rain? Yeah I’m still crying.
2. Miyamura (Horimiya)
Miyamura is one of those characters who doesn’t force anything. He doesn’t confess in some big dramatic scene. He just… makes you feel safe. He listens. He respects boundaries. He’s also super awkward and weird in a way that makes you want to protect him.
And I like that Horimiya didn’t drag out the will-they-won’t-they thing for 20 episodes. They got together early and then you just see them be together. Which is rare. And honestly kind of comforting.
3. Takeo Gouda (My Love Story!!)
If you’ve never watched My Love Story!!, please do. It looks silly at first, and yeah it kind of is, but in the best way. Takeo is like the exact opposite of every typical romance lead. He’s massive, looks like a linebacker, has no idea how to flirt or be subtle, and is just the purest boy alive.
He sees a girl getting harassed, steps in, saves her, and then falls head over heels for her like a golden retriever on fire. And he’s never once creepy or gross about it. He just wants her to be happy.
He also has the most supportive best friend in anime. Suna deserves his own show but anyway. Takeo is proof that you don’t need to be a skinny, sulky dude to get the girl. Sometimes being kind and loud works too.
4. Hachiman Hikigaya (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU)
But the writing in Oregairu is top tier, and it shows you why he acts that way. He thinks being hated is better than being fake. He thinks doing the right thing means taking all the blame. And slowly, very slowly, he learns that maybe he wants something real.
When he says “I want something genuine,” that scene stuck with me. It’s not about love triangles or romance drama anymore. It’s about someone realising they’ve been alone for too long.
Also, his dynamic with Yukino is so sharp, it cuts. Their conversations feel like arguments but in a way where they’re both trying to understand each other without admitting it. Complex and painful and good.
5. Kazehaya (Kimi ni Todoke)
Look, I get it. He’s very plain. Very sweet. Very normal. But that’s kind of the point. Kimi ni Todoke is so soft it makes me want to fall asleep in a sunflower field.
Kazehaya doesn’t play games. He likes Sawako, says so, and then spends the entire show just… being supportive. He never pushes her. Never teases her for being awkward. He just shows up and makes her feel seen.
That shouldn’t be rare in anime but it is. And honestly it’s kind of healing to watch. Like, here’s a guy who’s popular and could have anyone, but he’s completely focused on the quiet girl in the back who thinks she’s cursed.
Also his blushing scenes are elite. And when he finally confesses and she doesn’t hear it properly and he has to say it again??? My soul left my body.
