When Gods Step In: What Hoyoverse Just Dropped in ‘The Gods’ Limits’ Teaser for Genshin Impact
So it’s Wednesday night. I was half-asleep, phone in hand, just scrolling. Suddenly HoYoverse drops this thing called Teyvat Chapter Interlude Teaser: The Gods’ Limits. I thought maybe it was a promo or something for Natlan. But no. It’s nine minutes of pure lore explosion. I watched it once, then again, then paused every three seconds the third time.
They introduced these beings called the Four Shades, who are above Archons. Literal world-ruling level.
Wait... There’s a Ruler of Space?
So, you remember the unknown floating cube lady who splits the Traveler twins at the very beginning? Turns out she’s not just a plot device. She’s Asmoday, the Ruler of Space. She’s one of the Four Shades. Like she sits at the same table as the Rulers of Death, Life, and Time. But also apparently, she’s gone rogue? Or just missing? Either way she’s not hanging out with the others anymore. Something happened. Traveler separation was not random.
And now that I know she’s literally Space itself, I’m scared. What does that even mean? Can she warp entire regions? Has she been watching us this whole time?
So Who Are These Other Shades?
Alright, here’s the breakdown:
-
Ronova, Ruler of Death. Absolute unit. She was the one behind the Khaenri’ah immortality curse from 500 years ago. The entire Abyss Order situation is on her. She’s not sorry.
-
Istaroth, Ruler of Time. She's been name-dropped before. Linked to Inazuma, Enkanomiya, even Mondstadt. Might be friends with Venti. Might also be Venti? No one knows.
-
Naberius, who used to be the Ruler of Life. But Rhinedottir (yes, Albedo’s creepy mom) ate him or merged with him or something and now she has that title. Classic Rhinedottir things.
So all of these gods were created by something called the Heavenly Principles, probably the actual creator of Teyvat. The Shades were meant to maintain reality. Clearly that didn’t work out.
Ronova Did What?
This part made me pause. The voiceover casually mentions that Ronova was the one who cursed the people of Khaenri’ah. You know, with immortality. As in, the Abyss Order, Dainsleif, Kaeya’s ancestors. That curse is on her. That war, the fall of an entire nation, the Traveler waking up in a broken world, and Ronova lit the match.
And she’s still out there doing whatever she wants. Like, does she feel bad? Is she planning more? Does she want to erase humanity next?
Rhinedottir Is Technically a God Now?
So, Naberius was the original Ruler of Life. Some mysterious alchemical Shade. But Rhinedottir (who already gave us Durin and maybe Scaramouche’s robot body, I’m guessing) merged with him. She took on his divine authority. She is now literally the god of life.
That’s like if Frankenstein’s creator became immortal and started casually creating entire races. I feel like the Archons should be doing something about this, but nah, they're still fighting over gnosis and family trauma.
And Istaroth... She’s Been Here the Whole Time?
Istaroth is weird. Like, timeline weird. People thought she was gone but she’s not. She’s been present in past events like Inazuma’s Sacred Sakura planting, Enkanomiya’s history, and even in Mondstadt’s calendar system. She shows up in whispers. Old prayers. Things no one noticed.
Also her voice sounds suspiciously like Venti’s. Not a theory. Literally same voice actor. Don’t know if that’s lore or budget.
But if she’s been active while the others were disappearing or switching sides, she might be the last one trying to hold it all together. Maybe. Or maybe she’s got her own messed up plan.
Asmoday Going AWOL Is Kinda Terrifying
So remember, she’s the one who split the twins. She kicked off the story. She has powers over space. But now the other Shades don’t even know where she is? The teaser hints she might have another master. Like who’s above the literal god of space?
Also. What if... Paimon is involved? Not saying she’s Asmoday but like... her sudden appearance, her title as "Emergency Food," her weird floaty nature. There’s something going on.
Why This Is a Bigger Deal Than It Looks
It basically rewrites everything we thought we knew. The Archons were never the top. Celestia is not just some fancy cloud kingdom. The Abyss didn’t just show up. And the Traveler’s journey is part of a cosmic, probably doomed system.
We’re probably heading to Nod-Krai next (region after Natlan maybe?) and the way the teaser is framed, it feels like something world-ending is coming. The Four Shades don’t agree with each other anymore. There’s chaos among the gods. And the Traveler is in the middle of it.
